Asia Bailey Selected for GB Team - Junior World Championships
|
A Scottish Rising Star to Join the British Team
for the 9th Junior World Championships For the first time in 10 years a Scottish player will join the British National Team for the Junior World Championships, taking place in Egypt in early April 2012. This was achieved by Scottish National Team Elite Squad player, Asia Bailey (Central Taekwondo Academy, Falkirk). Asia’s rise into sport Taekwondo has been nothing less than spectacular considering she only took up intense training almost one year ago when she joined Scotland’s high Performance Development Programme. Master Jakubiak, Scotland’s Performance Coach, said: “Asia’s story is really quite an inspiring one. Here’s a girl with a high work ethic, a genuine passion for the sport, who listens to our advice and seeks our guidance. She is determined and enjoys the challenges of sport Taekwondocompetition. I am not surprised she got a call to the British National Team as I have seen how quickly she progressed in the sport over the past year and I can see the tremendous potential she has. |
What has made the call more significant is that Asia managed to get a place over other more experienced players. On top of that, the Performance Director and coaches of the British team are very demanding when it comes to picking players for a World Championship;
they only take people who they believe can deliver medal winning performances – this is why she is one of only two female players chosen for this prestigious event.
Everyone in Scotland needs to understand this superb outcome was only possible due to Asia’s tenacity as well as the good guidance from the coaches in our programme and her club instructor. There is no magic recipe, there are no magic ingredients. There are many more young players around Scotland with great potential and Asia has just shown to them that they too can be part of the British team and compete at the highest level as long as they put in the work.”
Asia comes from a family of Taekwondo champions. Both her Mum and Dad have won caps for the Scottish and British teams with great results in Poomse and Sport Taekwondo. Perhaps it can be argued that high performance is in Asia’s DNA. But in any case she still had to prove herself and she did so delivering excellent performances at various events around UK and other countries in Europe.
With the experience and confidence she gained from competing she tried for the junior team where, during the lengthy selection process, she managed to impress, once again, the coaches of the British team who very recently offered her a place in the British Junior Talent
Development Programme.
Regardless of what happens next, Asia has already made herself and everyone else in Scotland very proud and for that we would like to say very well done to her and all the very best for the future of her sport Taekwondo career.
We shall keep you up to date with Asia’s preparations for the Junior World Championships.
What an exciting time for Asia! What an exciting time for Scottish Taekwondo!
